Tortuga is based on interactions with other players. In some cases, you and your crew will need to rely on your enemies to achieve your goals when attacking a Spanish galleon, but the next turn the crew may betray you, cause a mutiny, and keep all the treasure for themselves.

Since no one has a "hand" of cards, the game relies on knowledge and communication related to the shared Event cards. Unless you are in a completely desperate situation, it is not wise to turn over Event cards at random. Almost half of all Event cards can seriously damage your team. Often, it is worth using an action to see what the next Event card will be, or to rely on the knowledge of a trusted ally. The most successful players are those who can determine who their ally is and share information only with them at crucial moments.
